Pastor Elizabeth Platz Guest Preacher
Thankoffering...gifts of faithful hearts. The St. Paul, Women
of the ELCA celebrated Thankoffering Sunday on November 22 with Pastor
Elizabeth Platz as our guest preacher. Pastor Platz holds the distinction
of being the first woman ordained in the Lutheran Church in America.
She has served at the University of Maryland, College Park since 1965,
first as an Associate in Ministry, then as Campus Pastor following her
ordination on November 22, 1970. During her ministry, she has served
as an interim pastor with many congregations, established a university
child care program, prepared the campus sexual harassment policy, served
on the University President's Commission on Women's Issues, developed 20
years of cooperative Lutheran-Episcopal ministry, and developed a student-to-student
ministry. Pastor Platz was named the University of Maryland's Outstanding
Woman of the Year in 1995. She is the widow of the late Reverend
Canon Wofford K. Smith, Episcopal Priest. |
After the service a luncheon was held in Pastor Platz's
honor. This was also the 28th aniversary of her ordination.
Our children sang at the service.
