Steeple and Roof Repair and Restoration 2005

This page captures some of the events of the Steeple and Roof project that was completed in 2005.  In 2003 and 2004 inspections of the steeple and roof indicated they where in need of significant repair.  The repairs have been under way for most of the summer of 2005.

Picture of the roof and steeple in early 2004 prior to the start of work.  At a distance things didn't look too bad.  As shown in the pictures below a close look shows significant deterioration.

Closer pictures show problems with the cedar shake shingles, clap boards and surface of bell tower.  This project also included repairs to the bell supports inside as well.

In the original project we had hoped to repair and repaint the metal roof.  As the repairs where started we found the metal roof was not sound and needed to be replaced.  We chose a shingle roof to replace the metal roof.

This is a scene in June after the roof had been completed and work was underway on the steeple.

I'll bet you where wondering how the steeple work is done.  As you can see the majority of the work is being done by a steeplejack from a bosun's (boatswain) chair that is attached to the top of the steeple.  Shown in the picture is the steeplejack, Vall Boring of Steeples Plus, Inc.
