Gleaning July 1999
On July 10 1999,  17 people traveled from Jefferson to Papa John's Farm near Odenton, Maryland in Anne Arundel County to glean a cabbage field.  Once there, we joined 8 other people from Baltimore and Silver Spring.  We worked for about 2 hours and gleaned over 6 tons of cabbages.   To put the gleaning opportunity into perspective, we gleaned about one third of the two fields that were available to us.

Papa John's Farm is under contract with Giant Food, and the field had already been harvested of all cabbages that met the Giant restrictions (usually dealing with size -- cabbages that were much larger than softballs were left in the fields).

We left Jefferson about 7:45 AM and got to the gleaning site around 9:00 AM.  We gleaned until about 11 or 11:30, had lunch (which we brought with us) and then came home.  We were back in Jefferson before 2:00 PM.

The cabbages were distributed to various food banks and soup kitchens in Baltimore and Washington.  We also brought back cabbages for distribution in our own food bank.
